In Saint-Martin de Crau in the Bouches-du-Rhône, the large-scale farms that supply the supermarkets practice intensive agriculture that exhausts the soil and produces beautiful, tasteless and almost cheap red tomatoes all year round.
This agriculture often exploits foreign seasonal workers in a shameful way. Most of them are Moroccan and work under “OMI” contracts in unacceptable conditions. It is in the Rif region that these contracts are negotiated. Fortunately, there is still an agriculture in Saint-Martin that provides healthier products, respects the dignity of the employees and preserves the land. An agriculture that must now be protected…
